REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES

Removable Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are the most common type of denture. They are designed to replace one or more missing teeth. They are often referred to as " removable partial denture" or "partials".

People often choose removable partial denture (RPD) over other type of restorative prosthesis for the following reasons:

  • Oral Hygiene : Because of the removable nature, partial denture can be taken out of the mouth for easy cleaning and to maintain the excellent oral health.
  • Repairs: This is a big advantage of RPD over fixed partial denture. As long as the denture is not too damaged, we can repair . Most of repairs can be done on same day.
  • Transformation:  As RPD, we have ability to transform it to a complete denture, or extend the denture to another side of the arch, add more teeth and can change its classification.
  • Less invasive: As compared to other restorative treatment such as crown or bridges or implants, RPD offer relatively the least invasive and destructive restoration treatments. Most can be made without having to grind or adjust adjacent teeth. In case of cast partial denture, we may need some adjustment to natural teeth to ensure the functionality is achieved.

There are 3 type of partials including Cast partials, Acrylic partials and Flexible partials

Acrylic Partial Denture

This is most durable and highly recommended type of RPD. Because, it is strong and is made from Chrome-Cobalt alloy which is stainless and bio-compatible. Moreover, beside the strong framework, the cast partial has several components to ensure it is passive and retentive inside your mouth. Those components are clasps assembly ( retentive clasp, reciprocal claps, rests and minor connector), indirect retainer, major connectors and denture base

This type of treatment required rest seat preparation on the abutments (the anchored teeth)

Acrylic Partial Denture

This is the another of RPD which is designed to replace missing teeth.

The benefits of having acrylic partial denture are that it is lighter than cast partial, It is the alternative for patient who has allergy to Chrome Cobalt metals. and it requires no grinding or adjusting teeth. Also, this type of treatment can be an immediate treatment for patient who just lost their teeth.

However, this type of denture is considered as short-term denture or introductory denture. Because of not having unified components such as Clasp assembly and cast frameworks, therefore, most of its support comes from the underlying tissue. As the underlying tissue is undergoing changes, the acrylic denture tends to be mobile and loose after a period of time.

Solutions to this issue with the denture is to have it check every 6 months to ensure the passivity of the denture and if necessary, we also offer refitting of the denture.

Flexible Partial Denture

Flexible Partial Denture

Flexible Partial Denture

As the name suggests, this type of partial is flexible. It can be considered as the most comfortable type denture as the entire denture is made from flexible nylon and it is an excellent option to those who are allergic to metal and acrylic. The denture is easy to insert and easy to remove and also it is bio-compatible

The flexible partia

The denture is easy to insert and easy to remove and also it is bio-compatible

The flexible partial comes with variety of colors such as gum color, tooth color or even transparent.  However, This denture comes with many disadvantages such as it is not passive as we are eating or speaking. There is micro movement of the denture and these movement are affecting our oral structure in long term . Although minimal and unnoticeable, over a prolonged period of time, this could cause some concerns such as gum recession, fast bone resorption and less retentive. This option is best for patients who lost only a few teeth or those who are waiting for more permanent solution.
